The challenge, as the weather cools down, is to stay active and stick to your healthy and fitness goals. If you don't already record in a journal what you eat and how much you exercise, then although that might sound scary, it's a good idea. If nothing else it makes you focus honestly on what you are doing and you will catch yourself slipping that much faster, so you can get back on track.

My perennial favorite fitness device has always been a pedometer. I found after a while I wasn't happy to just do the minimum... it really does make you want to move, to improve your score!

What's The Best Pedometer?

A pedometer is one of the best ways to keep track of your movement, your activity in day. Your activity levels - or your 'out put' can help you determine your 'in take levels' to help you modify your in take or diet, so you can more easily maintain your weight and health goals.

This article features the top three pedometers available today. They are each in a different format, so you will be able to choose the features and style that suits your needs best.

Firstly we have the most popular pedometer, the wildly popular Fitbit Wireless Activity/Sleep Tracker, Black/Blue which tracks your steps, the stairs you climbed, the distance covered, calories burned, and activity level via 3-d motion sensor and altimeter technology - and it downloads it wirelessly to your computer as you come within a short distance of it - it also updates your iPhone too if you install the app.  If you are a charts and graphs person, you will love this information.  Be sure to check out the quick video on the review page to get a good overview of the features available - and see the cool technology in action!

Clever than it looks, the Omron HJ-112 Digital Pocket Pedometer tracks yours steps and calories etc, as you would expect and it also zeros itself at midnight, and keeps a works worth of info in a log so you only have to stop once a week to record your results - very clever. It clips to your belt or waistband - and there is a customer photo of it attached to shoe laces. You can also get a holster and leach for it. The important thing with pedometers is that you wear it from when you get out of bed until you get back into bed. Three videos give you the scoop - including one from Bob Greene - the info and the pedometer will keep you motivated to move and create the willingness to move more. I find I am always trying to 'beat' a previous best!

No set or calibration of stride length required, just strap on the Smart Health Walking FIT and head out the door, and you'll be instantly gathering data, your steps, calories burned, distance covered all the while, monitoring your heart rate. This is a really good feature, the heart rate monitor, if you looking to increase your fitness or lose weight, you need to exercise to a certain level. So once you know where the zone is you need to maintain, it is as easy as a look at a watch to ensure you are still on track. Be aware the pedometer is on your wrist, if you walk without swinging your arms... get a different pedometer!

How Does Sleep Affect Your Weight | How Does "The Fitbit" Help?

If you have not seen the post - Fitbit | What's a Fitbit? you might like to read that one first.

The Fitbit is a device that helps you track your energy burning activities during the day to help you stay on target to reach your fitness and health and wellness goals.

It is widely reported that to get fitter and leaner, we need to use up more energy by moving more each day. This device counts all of your movement during the day and compiles the feedback into easy to read results.

Experts recommend we move to the equivalent of 10,000 steps a day. But if you just use a simple, standard way of counting those steps, your total movement amount will still be a mystery. You need to be able to count climbing stairs, steps you take, energy burned and the overall distance you traveled.

Setting the intention to move more, and tracking your steps with the Fitbit is a great step toward a healthier you.

Designed to be worn under your clothing, clipped to a belt, waistband or bra, the Fitbit wirelessly tracks your activity and logs your results on your free Fitbit.com account.

Do you want to see how the Fitbit works?  Check out this quick Fitbit video.

When you next log in to your free online account (no monthly or annual subscriptions to pay here) you will be able to track your progress and view your results as graphs.

If you have an iPhone, via an iPhone app you can add and update data too. Log your stats each morning, update your food log and add details of additional fitness activities (such as swimming) that the Fitbit can't automatically log.

How Does Sleep Affect Your Weight?

Leptin and ghrelin are two hormones that are ideally kept in balance. Leptin's job is to signal that you are full. Ghrelin's job is to tell you are hungry.

Alarmingly, sleep deprivation can result in lower levels of leptin production. When our leptin levels are lower than normal, we don't feel as satisfied after eating. As if that isn't enough, not getting enough shut-eye causes higher levels of ghrelin, causing you to feel hungry.

Fitbit Sleep Tracker

With this explanation, you can understand why good quality sleep is another key to good health, which is why Fitbit is also designed to track your sleep. It measures how long and how well you sleep. You just wear it on your wrist at night with the supplied Fitbit wristband.

Fitbit | What's a Fitbit?

It was time to replace my pedometer, unfortunately I have been unable to get a new battery for the old dear, but it had done sterling service and earned its retirement. Boy, things have really changed in the market place since my old pedometer was 'hot property' in the fitness market. I guess if I think back to what my cell phone was like back when I bought it, I shouldn't be so surprised. I have an iPhone now, and am used to the Apps, so I wondered how many, if any, pedometer type devices could hook up to the iPhone so I could get some stats... Turns out the answer is 'a few'. But for me, the Fitbit stood head and shoulders above the pack.
