How Does Sleep Affect Your Weight | How Does "The Fitbit" Help?

If you have not seen the post - Fitbit | What's a Fitbit? you might like to read that one first.

The Fitbit is a device that helps you track your energy burning activities during the day to help you stay on target to reach your fitness and health and wellness goals.

It is widely reported that to get fitter and leaner, we need to use up more energy by moving more each day. This device counts all of your movement during the day and compiles the feedback into easy to read results.

Experts recommend we move to the equivalent of 10,000 steps a day. But if you just use a simple, standard way of counting those steps, your total movement amount will still be a mystery. You need to be able to count climbing stairs, steps you take, energy burned and the overall distance you traveled.

Setting the intention to move more, and tracking your steps with the Fitbit is a great step toward a healthier you.

Designed to be worn under your clothing, clipped to a belt, waistband or bra, the Fitbit wirelessly tracks your activity and logs your results on your free Fitbit.com account.

When you next log in to your free online account (no monthly or annual subscriptions to pay here) you will be able to track your progress and view your results as graphs.

If you have an iPhone, via an iPhone app you can add and update data too. Log your stats each morning, update your food log and add details of additional fitness activities (such as swimming) that the Fitbit can't automatically log.

How Does Sleep Affect Your Weight?

Leptin and ghrelin are two hormones that are ideally kept in balance. Leptin's job is to signal that you are full. Ghrelin's job is to tell you are hungry.

Alarmingly, sleep deprivation can result in lower levels of leptin production. When our leptin levels are lower than normal, we don't feel as satisfied after eating. As if that isn't enough, not getting enough shut-eye causes higher levels of ghrelin, causing you to feel hungry.

With this explanation, you can understand why good quality sleep is another key to good health, which is why Fitbit is also designed to track your sleep. It measures how long and how well you sleep. You just wear it on your wrist at night with the supplied Fitbit wristband.
