I had seen these in the kitchen stores, but had never considered buying one until I was house sitting a home over the winter that had loads of citrus trees. The top seller in microplanes is the Microplane 40020 Classic Zester/Grater as seen in the picture.
It's got many more uses than just getting the rind (no pith) off citrus though. It's great to create the edge, using a filing action, on a pie or tart - speaking of which - Lemon Polenta Cake anyone? I also use it for quickly grating cheese into a sauce - straight into the pan. It's really great for hard cheeses too, like fresh grated (no crumbs) of Parmesan to finish a pasta dish this Microplane 40020 Classic Zester/Grater is perfect. When you run it down the side of a chocolate bar, it does a beautiful job of creating chocolate curls too. Much easier to use, to clean and put away than a regular grater. I find I make less mess when I use it to, so that's a good thing - no wonder it get so much use!
